Q and A with Ms. Thomas
What do you love most about Teaching?
What I love most about teaching is knowing that every day I am helping to educate young minds, and students who will someday lead our community. I enjoy working to make every day in the classroom memorable, both with the successes and the struggles. Through these experiences, students see the opportunity to learn and grow in both academic and social situations. I take much pride in knowing that I am helping to instill the foundational skills in ELA, Math, Writing, and Science that will help contribute to their future success in the years that follow. Every class is different, and therefore a variety of learning styles and abilities of all students is constantly changing, and can be challenging when teaching so many content areas. I enjoy this challenge, because it allows me to improve on my teaching practices and lesson delivery methods. Lastly, what I enjoy most is having students and parents from previously taught classes come up to me, and tell me how much they enjoyed my class and having me as their teacher! There sweet faces and kind words are the greatest compliments to receive!
Is there a group of students or a class period that you are particularly proud of and would like to Honor?
I am very proud, and would like to honor all students in my current 4th grade class. From the moment they entered the classroom, they’ve understood that a higher expectation of success had been set for them. Each day we worked together to establish a strong and positive classroom community. It is my belief that children will thrive in an environment that is encouraging and comfortable. Throughout the school year the students have learned to take charge of their own learning, while at the same time encouraging and supporting one another. Every morning our class begins with a ‘Morning Meeting’, students gather in a circle and greet each other with a handshake or “special greeting”. All students are acknowledged for their presence in the classroom. It’s great to see the personalities of all the students evolve from the beginning of the school year to now! This activity has helped the students to work collaboratively in pairs and group projects, which has helped to build their communication skills and expand their vocabulary. I’m also honored to have the opportunity to work collaboratively and co-teach with Ms. E. Thomas (Computer Tech), Ms. Botone (SPED), and Mr. Jalbunaa (Music) whose classroom presence has contributed to the success of the students. Having them in the classroom working with individuals and in small groups has helped to demonstrate the real world application skills needed to be successful in the classroom. I’m very thankful to have an opportunity to teach a wonderful group of students, who’ve demonstrated that if you (teacher) set the bar high, have a great attitude, and show encouragement, they’re willing to tackle any challenge placed in front of them!
